Shapeways 3D-Printing Facility Photo Tour

A recent Mashable article showed a photo tour of a new 3D-printing facility.

Shapeways took the wraps off its new 25,000-square foot 3D-printing facility in a ribbon-cutting ceremony with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg earlier this month.

(The scissors used in the ceremony were 3D-printed, of course.)

The factory, which is located in Long Island City, is Shapeways’ first outside the Netherlands and currently houses five printers and nine employees. The company plans to expand to between 30 and 50 printers and between 50 and 60 employees within the next year. Most of those employees will be designers and engineers.

Day of the Dead

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a Mexican holiday celebrated throughout Mexico and around the world in other cultures. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it is a national holiday, and all banks are closed. The celebration takes place on November 1, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. They also leave possessions of the deceased.  Read more about Day of the Dead on Wikipedia.

How is balsamic vinegar made?  In this video series, Anthony tells us the fascinating and complex story of how Balsamic Vinegar is made. It starts with the low-alcohol grapes of the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, which are cooked down to "grape must." Anthony will explain the difference between traditional and commercial Balsamic Vinegars, and how to pick out a good Balsamic in the store.

While Balsamic Vinegar Tradizionale is perfect for special occasions, everyday balsamic vinegar is too delicious not to use more often. Made with grape must and red wine vinegar, and fermented in oak barrels for two months, everyday balsamic vinegar is thicker in texture than other vinegars, but not as thick as Tradizionale. Using DeLallo's Balsamic Vinegar and Private Stock Balsamic Vinegar to illustrate, Anthony shows us how to read a vinegar label and how to learn the key traits of a quality Balsamic Vinega.

Extra virgin olive oil can be flavored in a wide variety of ways, creating an abundance of wonderful cooking tools. The process of crafting a wonderful flavored olive oil begins with selecting the appropriate oil for the flavor you wish to use.

Ojai Olive Oil is located on the Asquith Ranch, in the east end of Southern California’s stunning Ojai Valley. Ojai is a remarkable place, with a community every bit as rich and diverse as its natural surroundings. It has become a gathering place for farmers, artists, healers and a sanctuary for those seeking a more peaceful and harmonious existence for themselves and their families.

The Mediterranean climate here is perfect for a wide range of agriculture, and happens to be particularly good for olives. The main grove on our ranch was planted by Spanish missionaries in the 1880s, back when there was a communal olive press in the valley. At that time the valley produced a significant quantity of olive oil, and the trees thrived here. There suitability to the Ojai climate is evident in the fact that the trees on our ranch have survived here for over a century, without much of any care. Through droughts, wildfires, and storms, the olive trees have persisted. Our Signature Extra Virgin Olive Oil comes from these old Spanish trees, a Lechin de Sevilla varietal that produces a wonderfully robust and peppery olive oil.
